Golight Inc. was proud to add two young interns to the staff for the 2011 summer. Both work in a different department of the company, learning about shipping and accounts receivable. Jason asked me if I would gather information on both interns (including myself) and write a little article about us. Little does he know that this “little” article contains a lot of information!
I’ll get started with myself. My name is Jaime Melton and I recently graduated from Hayes Center with the class of 2011. In high school I was active in volleyball, Student Council, FFA, One-Act, journalism, Letterman’s Club, Honor Society, and Quiz Bowl. My highlight in high school was receiving Homecoming Queen my senior year because I was kind of seen as the underdog compared to the other senior girls. A few things I enjoy is volleyball, riding horses, and traveling. I don’t like spiders, hospitals, or bad drivers.
I am a News-Editorial major attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I will be a freshman this fall as I tackle being a Nebraska Cornhusker (no pun intended Husker fans). I plan on graduating from UNL with a bachelor’s in News-Ed with a minor in language.
After college I plan to land a job in reporting international news. I want to be the journalist that covers stories overseas such as the tsunami at Japan or the war in Libya.
Here at Golight I work with the shipping department. Mary, Lisa, and Kaisha are always teaching me something new about the different systems used to send lights all over the world. I also answer the phone occasionally, but mainly towards the end of the day when Karla, Kari, and Stacee have gone home.
Many strange and funny things happen here at Golight. Just recently we tried talking Jerry into buying Golight a pool. It gets hot here in Nebraska during the summer and hey, a pool would be a great way to cool down after being in the warehouse. Lisa made a funny comment to Jerry about the girls cooling off and suddenly he’s considering a stock tank for Golight. We found our joke for the summer!
Next is Stacee Wright. Stacee graduated from Wauneta-Palisade in 2008. She was active in FFA, Honor Society, Drama, Student Council, and many more activities. In high school she competed in National Envirothon and placed seventh in oral presentation, which she considers the highlight of her high school career. She enjoys fishing, friends, jokes, and her brothers. Ironically, she also dislikes her brothers, rude people, and snakes.
Stacee is a student at Chadron State College and she’s working her way to earning a degree in Business Administration with a minor in Ag Business. She is President of the Honor Society at the college. She also helps new students as an Ambassador and RA for Chadron State College.
After college Stacee plans on finding a career in business. Karla added that Stacee wants to be like Kari Klumpe and Karla McCorkle or a combination of the two because that would be unbelievable! I’m not sure if Golight could handle that.
Accounts Receivable is where you can find Stacee working here at Golight. She updates files for the sales people and regularly answers the phone for clients. She also gets stuck with odd jobs every now and then, such as cleaning out the fridge (GROSS!).
Stacee’s Golight story is also a recent one here at Golight. Colt, who’s known as the prankster of the workplace, put a popping device under Stacee’s drink at her desk while she was at lunch. When she came back she went to grab her drink and POP! It sounded like a firecracker went off, making everyone jump back, especially Stacee. We immediately knew the culprit was Colt, because we could all hear him snickering down the hallway. I think Stacee is still plotting revenge for that and a couple of other pranks done to her.
So there you have it. Now everyone who reads this article will have a little more knowledge on Stacee and me.

**Time for a bit of disclosure: Those of you who have read any of the Golight blog articles prior to this one will likely notice a marked improvement in grammar, content and overall style. This is due to the fact that Jaime Melton, one of our new summer interns, is manning the helm of the blog for the next few weeks.**

Several members of our Golight crew participated in the annual Cornhusker State Games Torch Run, held here across our state of Nebraska. The run initially starts along the Nebraska/Wyoming border with the first stop being at Scottsbluff starting June 1st and ending in Lincoln on June 27th to kick off the Cornhusker State Games (our state Olympics so to speak). The Nebraska Army National Guard and Air Guard put on the run for Nebraskans all across the state to participate in. Golight warehouse members Amanda, John, William, and Customer Service Manager Jeff ran mile markers 66-70 on the stretch between Imperial and McCook on June 9, 2011.
Six of us crammed into Jeff’s car to drive down to our starting point. Jeff was driving while Jason, our camera man, sat shotgun. Amanda, myself, and William took the middle seat, leaving John to ride in the back. When we arrived we met with the torch guy who made the runners sign waivers and a cop that would hold off traffic for the runner. We all bailed out to meet the both of them and boy, did the cop get a laugh out of John climbing out of the back of that car!
Jeff was our first runner, starting at mile marker 66 to run to 67 while holding the torch. Being the oldest of the group, Jeff caught a hard time about “collapsing on the highway” or “having a heart attack.” He proved everyone wrong though and ran his mile without any difficulty! Good job Jeff!
Next up was John. He told us he had a song picked out by Avenged Sevenfold to help keep pace while he ran, but by the end of the mile he admitted to the song playing “too fast” making him run faster than he anticipated.
At mile marker 68 William was waiting for John and the torch. It seems he was the only one out of our group who had any confidence about running this thing, because he was ready to go. Of course it didn’t help that all of us at Golight were saying he would have to run the stretch with the most hills. It turns out William had no hills to run at all! What a bummer.
After William took off we all bailed into our vehicle to drive to the next mile marker. Well, since our last stop was at 68 you can only imagine what our next number was… and just as we expected, Amanda’s sign was missing, so we had to take a wild guess at where mile marker 69 might have been. Once William met us, Amanda took the torch and started on her way. We bailed into the car once again to meet her at the end of her stretch, and we all got a pretty good laugh when we noticed just how badly traffic was being held up behind her. The poor girl was also our only runner to end up with any hills whatsoever, so we’re pretty sure she walked when we were out of sight but who can blame her? The hill she had was huge!
At the end we thanked Chris Russel of the Nebraska National Guard for helping to put on the torch run before heading back to Golight to tell everyone of our little adventure of the day!

We wear many hats here at Golight! Of course I’m making a literal reference to the picture you see above—crazy hat day was the brain child of Karla Mckorkle in an effort to spice up the notion of casual Friday. If you’ve ever called our customer service line and been greeted by an effervescent personality and an affectionate drawl, you’ve likely spoken with Karla (she’s the one in the front row with the western style hardhat). Besides participating in our Friday festivities, however, the employees at Golight wear a number of figurative hats as well.
We, collectively, compose a relatively small company and that makes us a responsive and well rounded organization. Those of us in sales and marketing also take customer service calls. We all have input in product upgrade and development. We learn from our customers because we speak to them daily. And our input isn’t relegated to a suggestion box or an email to a department in another building or on another coast, either; it’s given in person at a morning meeting or with a stroll down the hall to Colt’s office. If the shipping department gets in a bind, you may well find someone from accounts receivable out lending a hand. This integrated and organic approach to business gives us all a better understanding of the entire company and hopefully makes us more approachable, so if you have any questions, comments, complaints or suggestions give our toll free number a call and any one of us will be glad to speak with you.
